Melbourne home full of light

This home is a converted 1840's coachman's cottage and stables in Melbourne. It's fantastic the way light streams in every room. Often I see homes in Australian magazines and the one thing that stands out is the light. Maybe the sun is just a little brighter down there.

Vogue Living Australia: Diane Bergeron's home

From Vogue Living Australia's September/October issue: Melbourne interior designer Diane Bergeron's home. Notice the use of black and white and bold patterns in each room? Love her use of luxurious fabric on the walls- something I've always wanted to try but didn't know how to carry out. The last photo is of her inspiration board.

By the way, the same issue features the home of another talented Australian, Anna Spiro, of the fabulous blog which most of you probably know, Absolutely Beautiful Things. I'm sure her home photos will be posted far & near, so I won't post them again here, but do take a look- gorgeous!

Australian artist: Emma Van Leest

I believe this Australian artist, Emma Van Leest, has already made the rounds of the blog world, but I just discovered her on the ARC Art, Design and Craft Biennal 2007 site, and again on ullabenulla's blog.
I think she's just amazing! Her work certainly reminds me of the cut silhouette trend, but it's original, intricate and tells a story.

More Australian goods

Lovely goods from Australian housewares and stationary shop, Mozi. Aside from the fun tea towels on the top row, they have the nicest office accessories. I don't think I've ever seen a cuter laptop sleeve as the little redbird printed one, nor a nicer mousepad (red striped). They are having a sale, and if you buy the olive oil decanter, they throw in a free a shopping bag.

These are street directory covers. I don't even have a street directory, but I could think of a way to use them anyway.

A study in deep blue & white

Recently I happened upon the striking photographs of Australian stylist Christine Rudolph's work. These elements come together perfectly- I especially like the arrangement of artwork on the wall- some framed and other pieces unframed. The dark blue walls give a shadowy look, so the black & white silhouettes and line drawings stand out. Stark contrasts make these rooms dramatic, but still simple.

Though I don't know if I could actually display taxidermied birds in my own living room, I like the idea. It's kind of like bringing remnants of the hunting lodge back to your city apartment! The bird fits with the naturalized elements trend over the past year (antlers and such - note to style mags: please, no more antlers). I love the darkly painted floors in the living room too- which of course, can only work if a room has tons of light, and this one does!
